The Bernsteins were greatly enjoying their cruise — until one night, they were shipwrecked. Not by a storm. By the racing thoughts about their return to shore the next day.

Millions of us board the bed each night meaning to reach the harbor of sleep, and never get there. It's rarely the noise, the screens, or the late coffee that's actually to blame. It's the endless mental replay — tomorrow's meeting, an old conversation, a decision still unmade — that quietly carries us further from rest with every passing minute.

You're Not Imagining How Common This Is

Close to half of adults cite racing thoughts as their main obstacle to falling asleep, and on average it costs over an hour of lost sleep a night. Being sleep-deprived on top of that roughly triples the risk of heightened anxiety the next day — which means the very thing keeping you awake gets stronger the less you sleep. It's a current pulling in one direction.

The Ship Isn't the Problem — The Anchor Is Missing

A mind that replays the day isn't a flaw. It usually means you're someone who takes things seriously — your work, your family, your responsibilities. The trouble isn't that your mind is active. It's that at 2 AM, it has nothing to hold onto, so it just keeps sailing. What actually helps isn't forcing the thoughts to stop — it's giving them somewhere to rest, so your mind can stop circling and drop anchor for the night.

You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone

If this is a pattern you recognize in yourself — most nights, not just an occasional rough one — it's worth understanding why your particular mind does this, and building a way back to a quieter harbor that actually fits your life.

Your mind deserves a quiet harbor. If you're ready to stop feeling shipwrecked by your own thoughts every night, that's exactly the kind of work I do with clients.
