Too Little or Too Much Sleep? What It's Really Doing to Your Body As Far As Sleep Duration and Aging.
A new study out of Columbia University suggests your sleep duration might be one of the most honest signals of how your body is actually aging.

There's a number I think about more than I probably should: 6.4 to 7.8.
That's the range a new Columbia University study, just published in Nature, found linked to the slowest biological aging — across 23 different aging measures spanning the brain, the heart, the lungs, digestion, nearly every system researchers could measure. Sleep too little, or even too much, and the body seems to age faster.
It's worth being careful here — this is an observational study. It shows a pattern, not proof that sleep duration alone is causing faster aging. But long before I ever saw this in a journal, I saw it up close.
I've sat with too many aging men who smile and say some version of the same thing: "Good sleep is part of my past." As if it's already decided. As if they've quietly accepted that this is just what happens now.
I never accept that answer.

Sleep isn't a luxury you age out of. It's not something you're supposed to sacrifice as the years go on. Yes, getting it back can be a real, uphill battle — but it's not one worth giving up on. You're entitled to fight for it. And this study suggests that winning it could mean a longer, healthier life.
If your nights have been too short, too long, or just not right for a while now, don't shrug it off. Pay attention to it.
You still deserve real rest. Go get it back.
If sleep has quietly become "something you gave up on," you don't have to fight this battle alone.
I work exclusively with men over 50 who are ready to stop accepting bad sleep as their new normal — helping them restore the kind of rest they thought was behind them.
